The new Aces

The title is just right. After letting go of premiere point guard, Mike Cortez, we’ll definitely see a new Aces this import-laced PBA Fiesta Cup. Alaska will have a new playmaker in Lewis Alfred, LA Tenorio. Forward Ken Bono and guard Larry Fonacier completes the deal between the Aces and Beverage Masters.

I believe Larry Fonacier is a gem to Coach Tim Cone’s eyes. Based on the last conference, Bono wasn’t able to show much although I can say that the talent and potential is there. His departure wouldn’t hurt the frontline of the Aces. Their two undersized bangers namely Ferriols and Hugnatan can get the job done for the coach Tim. Larry on the other hand has proven his worth in the pro league during his stint in Red Bull Barakos. He was drafted by the Barakos in the 2nd round. Fonacier is a cold-blooded shooter, one that Alaska badly needs especially for their triangle offense. Larry will definitely play a big role for Alaska offensively. I expect him to have a good playing time. It is even possible for him to play along side Alaska’s main man, Wille “Thriller” Miller. I’m sure Tim Cone is thirsty for a pure shooter after the days of Jojo “Jolas” Lastimosa and Roel Gomez. Cone bets on the Blue Eagle, Fonacier.

Changing the team’s starting playmaker definitely makes a big impact on any team. Adding a deadly wingman in Fonacier, makes the Aces a team to watch out in the 2008 PBA Fiesta Cup.

Just like the NBA, the PBA has also reached the web. Aside from the PBA’s official website, there are other sites that you can browse in order to get the latest updates about the league and your favorite team. Here are some sites that I can recommend.

Aside from featuring official news and updates regarding the league, these sites have independent forums where fans interact daily. Sometimes, the posts in the forums are even more updated than official releases. Fans get intrigued and excited particularly with player movements. Through the forum, fans are able to express their views and opinions about the PBA and of course the teams and rosters. The forums have created a healthy community for PBA fans.

Regarding official individual team sites, so far, only Alaska has an updated website. Although the other teams have their own sites, they are not updated with the latest bits and pieces. I will give an update soon regarding official websites of your favorite PBA teams.

PBA, Asia’s First Professional Basketball League

It was a sunny day when the Philippine Basketball Association opened its doors for business. The date was April 9, 1975, when the first game was played. Gregorio “Joy” Araneta scored the new league’s first points. The country was under the yoke of Martial Law but, inside the Araneta Coliseum it was a fiesta. The first professional league outside the United States had just began its enduring love affair with millions of Filipinos.

Frustrated and in conflict with the abrasive clutches of the Basketball Association of the Philippines (B.A.P.), the governing body of Pinoy basketball; nine clubs decided to band together and form the Philippine Basketball Association (P.B.A.). Toyota, Crispa, U-Tex, Royal Tru-Orange, Noritake, Carrier, Tanduay, Presto and Seven-Up were the charter members of the new league.

It was the start of something big and great! Basketball fans came from near and far to witness the action in The Big Dome . Asia’s first pro league had embarked on its remarkable journey.

PBA logos through time:

From 1975-2003, a season was usually composed of three conferences (tournaments). From the 1993 season, the conferences were named All Filipino, Commissioner’s and Governors Cups, usually ending in a best-of-7 Finals series match wherein the winner takes the Conference Cup. If the same team wins all of the conferences, the team is said to be the “Grand Slam” champion. A draft was held on January.

In 2004, then-commissioner Noli Eala introduced drastic changes to the season calendar. He reduced the number of conferences from three to two and changed the start of the season from February to October, so that the league can accommodate international tournaments that were frequently held from June to September. Another reason for the change in schedule was the popularity of college hoops, the NCAA and the UAAP, whose basketball season runs from June to October each year.

The first tournament is the Philippine Cup, which is held from October to February the following year, where only locals are allowed to play. The second tournament is the Fiesta Conference, held from March to June, teams are allowed to field one foreign player called an “import”. The Philippine Cup is identical to the All-Filipino Conference of the previous seasons. The rookie draft is now usually held every August.

Weeow! I’m finally with wordpress! I don’t know what took me so long to register with wordpress. I have all praises for wordpress. =)

Welcome to mypba. This is my 3rd blog focusing on basketball! But this one will be more directed to PBA, Philippine Basketball Association. Being a basketball lover, I am a fan of the only professional basketball league in the Philippines. I will be posting news and updates on all the PBA teams. At the same time, I’ll be sharing my thoughts and feedbacks.

I guess this is enough for a first post. Drop by regulary!
